Sandvik Stainless Steel Sandvik stainless steel developed for Opinel is renowned for its sharpness and ease of maintenance. Stainless steel capable of undergoing the heat treatment that gives it its good hardness is called martensitic. It has a carbon content of at least 0.40 which gives a very satisfactory edge without being susceptible to corrosion.

Invented by Marcel Opinel in 1955, this stainless steel safety ring locks the blade in the open position (safety in use).
